How to Use a Free Tufting Pattern

Once you've downloaded your favourite design, follow these steps to turn it into a rug or wall hanging.

  1. Download your pattern. Click the download button and save the PNG image to your device.
  2. Choose your size. Decide how large you want your rug to be. For beginners, a small or medium project is usually easiest.
  3. Transfer the design. Use a projector or a printed template to trace the pattern onto your stretched primary tufting cloth.
  4. Mirror the design if necessary. Because you tuft from the back, asymmetrical designs and text should be mirrored before tracing if you want the finished front to match the original.
  5. Choose your yarn colours. Start with two to four colours and mark your colour sections.
  6. Start tufting. Work along the outlines and fill in the larger sections. Keep the cloth properly stretched and follow your machine's operating instructions.
  7. Finish your project. Secure the yarn with suitable rug adhesive, apply backing and trim the surface.
Beginner tip: Start with larger shapes and fewer colour changes. Small details and tight corners can be tricky when you're still learning to control your tufting gun.

What Do You Need to Start Tufting?

To turn a free tufting pattern into a finished rug, you'll need a few basic supplies:

  • A tufting gun
  • A sturdy tufting frame with grippers
  • Primary tufting cloth
  • Yarn suitable for tufting
  • Rug adhesive and backing material
  • Scissors or clippers for finishing

If you're new to tufting, a tufting starter kit can help you get started with the essentials. You can also explore our tufting guns and tufting yarn to prepare for your first project.

Which Tufting Pattern Is Best for Beginners?

If you've never used a tufting gun before, choose a design with large colour areas and simple lines. The Rainbow Arches, Wavy Lines and Divided Circle patterns are good starting points.

Once you feel more comfortable, try the Geometric Grid or one of the abstract wall hanging patterns. There's no need to make your first rug complicated. Even a simple design can look great with the right colour combination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these tufting patterns really free?

Yes! All 12 patterns are free to download as PNG images. No purchase is required.

Can I print these tufting patterns?

Yes. Download the PNG file and print it at your preferred size. For larger projects, use a projector or print the image across multiple sheets of paper. Check the image resolution before enlarging it significantly.

Do I need a projector for tufting?

No, but a projector makes it easier to transfer larger or more detailed designs onto tufting cloth. You can also trace a printed template manually.

Do I need to mirror my tufting pattern?

You tuft from the back of the fabric, so the finished front appears mirrored. Flip your design horizontally before tracing if its orientation matters, especially for letters or numbers.

What size should my first tufted rug be?

A rug around 40–60 cm wide can be a manageable first project, depending on your design and frame size. Leave enough extra fabric around the edges for stretching and finishing.

Can I change the colours of these patterns?

Absolutely! These are outline patterns, so you're free to choose your own colour combinations and make each design your own.

Ready to Make Your First Rug?

Pick a pattern, choose your yarn colours and give it a try. Your first rug doesn't have to be perfect. That's part of learning something new.
