Inside the tufting workspace: Where ideas, yarn and creativity meet

Every tufter’s workspace tells a different story. Some studios are calm and carefully organised, others are colourful, busy and full of half-finished ideas waiting to be brought to life. But whether it’s a dedicated studio, a corner of a living room, or a shared creative space, the place where you tuft becomes part of the process.

For this blog, we asked a few tufters from the Tuftingshop community to share a glimpse into their workspace: the place where they stretch their cloth, pick their colours, and spend hours turning ideas into rugs. We wanted to know what these spaces look like, how they function, and what makes them work on a practical level.

A look into Custom Kleed's Office

For Frank at @customkleed, tufting is a way to slow down and disconnect from the demands of everyday life. He enjoys spending a couple of hours each day working on a rug, whether it's for a client, a friend, family, or simply for the love of creating. A rolling stool and a trolley keep his tools close at hand, making the entire tufting process feel smooth and efficient.

Marie’s colorful workspace

Marie's studio, @twentytwoactivities.tufting, brings several creative worlds together in one space. Alongside her tufting setup with frames, yarn and tools, she also has a graphic design desk and a small ceramics corner. That mix makes the room feel lively and personal, and gives her the freedom to move easily from one creative process to another. It’s a space that clearly reflects who she is and the way she works.

She spends a lot of time there, often full days, so having a practical setup matters just as much as the atmosphere. One thing that has made tufting easier for her is adding plenty of storage. With yarn, tools and materials all needing to fit into one room, staying organised helps keep the workflow smooth and the creative chaos under control.

Now that's a place to work from! Emmi lives and travels full-time in her van, which also serves as her mobile tufting studio. Working in such a small space has taught her the importance of staying organised, with every tool and cone of yarn having its own place. Her workspace is proof that with a bit of creativity and smart planning, you don't need a large studio to create beautiful rugs.

 

A garage turned into a tufting studio

What makes this workspace special is the journey behind it for Nicola from @fiore_rugs. What started as a simple garage used for storage has gradually evolved into a dedicated tufting studio. While the space may be small, Nicola says,  every corner has been adapted to support the tufting process, making it both practical and efficient.

The studio reflects years of growth as a maker and serves as a reminder of how far the journey has come. At the same time, it represents the next step forward: a foundation for an even bigger studio in the future, with more room to take on ambitious projects and continue pushing creative boundaries.

Chehrazad moved into her own tufting studio just over a year ago, marking an exciting milestone in her creative journey. After working from her mum’s place, she now has a dedicated space where she creates rugs, hosts workshops, and welcomes fellow makers. One of her favourite features is the bright red workbench she built together with friends, a daily reminder of how much her business, and the community around it, has grown.
