Tufting is making a rug by hand. A hand tufting tool ( tufting gun) pushes a needle withΒ yarn through a backing fabric ( tufting cloth).
A loop holds the yarn in place to form a tuft as the needle is removed. The yarn is caught in the backing fabric and held in place for loop-pile carpet or cut by blades for cut-pile rugs.
The rugs are tufted directly into shape, so that no residual material is created. The pile height is adjusted by cutting the yarn earlier or later when pushing it through the grid.
